Producto Limpio is a Farmer Certification that represents farmer initiated standards and transparency into the coffee value chain, and reduces costs of certification. Traditional Certifications like USDA organic are building costs and pressure of certifying bodies to the farmers that led them to create them the “Clean Coffee” or “Producto Limpio” standard.
Under Clean Coffee, coffee farmers still produce coffees using general organic guidelines as long as environmental factors permit it. Further more, “Clean Coffee” offer customers full transparency in production methods, and they publish 3rd party analysis of soil, water and the coffee cherry.
Especially for consumer networks which short lines into origin (like Direct Trade), where trust isn’t an issue and interest in coffee is high, farmer certification and 3rd party analysis might well replace rigid standardization through certification in the future.
