Quest for the perfect coffee - Guatemala San Antonio Huista

Our Quest for the perfect coffee takes us this month to Guatemala where some of the worlds best coffee is produced. The San Antonio Huista coffee is coming from the Huehuetenango region in the western highlands of Guatemala, close to the Mexican border.

Farmers in San Antonio Huista

This San Antonio Huista coffee is produced by ADIESTO cooperative, a nonprofit organization representing over 100 producers of cetified organic and conventional coffees. ADIESTO carries out technical assistance, provides microcredits, and strengthens the organization of business operations managment for the producers.

The farms of the small coffee producers are located in the mountainous area of the Huista region in Huehuetenango. Due to the altitude, between 950 and 1,800 meters above sea level, they produce parchment coffee with special SHB quality characteristics.

The association has 550 members: 150 women and 400 men, dispersed in small coffee farms located in 30 communities, which are equivalent to 30 groups. All together they farm 358.7 hectares and produce 15,000 quintals of parchment coffee per year. They are the pride of the communities where the coffee is farmed: Villalinda, Tajumulco, San José, Regadillos, Villanueva, Independencia, La Esperanza, Guantán, Vista Hermosa, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Casa Grande, Los Planes, Esquipulas, Ixmal, Pajal and El Coyegual, all of them in Huehuetenango.
