Sumatra Mandheling - Takengon
hierbas, cacao, nueces tostadas
Sumatra Mandheling coffees are famous for their peculiar flavor profile, low acidity, thick body, and rustic flavors that can often be described as earthy. Much of the flavor comes from the way Sumatra coffees are processed, the wet-hull method. The coffee is from family-owned farms in the highland territory, surrounding Lake Laut Tawar and the central city of Takengon in the Aceh province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia.
The city of Takengon, is considered to be the epicenter of one of the world’s most unique coffee terroirs. The province of Aceh, is a varied territory with high elevation grasslands, mountain ranges, and the massive Lake Toba, one of the island’s most famous coffee producing areas.

Sumatra coffee
I found that this coffee tasted much different than Latin American types (from Costa Rica and Brazil). I found that the Sumatra coffee was more citrus flavored and heavier, so I enjoyed the Santa Lucia more. Having said that, ordering the coffee couldn't be easier. I can choose quickly online, order immediately, and Tomas usually has my order available the next day for convenient pickup at their location in Campbell (near my home). I recommend trying several of their blends from around the world - to help you find your happy "coffee" place/source.

Smooth and delicious
I love this coffee! I got my delivery last week but this was my first opportunity to brew a batch. I was unsure of how I would feel about it because it is a dull, medium brown bean. For the level of roast, I expected it to be shinier and darker. So I began to think this might be too light of a roast for me, but I was wrong. It is so smooth, low in acid, and the notes of caramel are prominent - one the qualities I enjoy most in a coffee. I'm thrilled! I also got two other roasts from Tico and can't wait to try them.
Wonderful Reco from Tico
Stopped by the shop for a reco, and Thomas suggested the Mandheling based on my previous purchases. This roast really grew on me. Most impressive was that when it I was about to run out, I purchased another well known roasters beans (Tico unavailable) and did a side-by-side with a friend. Really no comparison. The competitor beans just didn't have the broad palate of flavors in the Mandheling. Really appreciated how chocolaty and rich the the Tico beans were by comparison (and even in comparison to other Sumatra coffees).
Too dark for my tast.
Coffee was fresh, it bloomed nicely. I wish the packaging had a roasted on date. The roast was a little too dark for my tastes. There were some great flavors, but they were hidden under the dark roast.
Tico Coffee Roasters
Hi Zach, thanks for your feedback and review. The coffee we ship out of our Roastery normally does not have a Roast Date on it as it is freshly roasted daily and packaged and then shipped within a day. Our Mandheling is roasted a little darker than our other coffees to bring out the best flavors of that specific coffee. We always find the sweet spot for our coffees and roast it to that exact point.
